Birdy’s cover of Skinny Love

Spending as much time as I currently am in libraries and computer rooms with essays and dissertation, I’m always ready to hear beautiful but not-too-distracting music. My prayers were answered by Birdy’s (real name Jasmine van den Bogaerde) cover of  Bon Iver’s Skinny Love.

The sign of a better-than-just-good cover is when the artist makes the song their own, as Johnny Cash did with Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt. This is exactly what Birdy has done with this song and I’m clearly not the only one who approves. The song has had a huge amount of radio play over the past fortnight and was one of Fearne Cotton’s songs of the week on Radio 1. As well as that, it’s peaked at 25 in the UK charts, though I expect it to climb.

The best bit is – Birdy’s only fourteen years old.

UPDATE: According to my friend Hannah, Birdy is releasing an album this summer. Can’t wait!

  1. Dickie

I love the original, but this is a terrific cover, without even taking into account the fact that Birdy is only 14.

  2. Dicky, you should try it on with her. Dicky and Birdy would be an AMAZING name combo. (Irish people follow my drift).

  3. wow. So Irish people no need to follow my drift! Apparently he’s not Irish! Possibly some Charlie Bird confusion in there.
